Aims
- In conjunction with the comfortable pace test and/or the maximum heart rate test to determine anaerobic threshold
- To establish a more accurate baseline for measuring improvement
Suitability
For the very de conditioned or medically referred client, the benefits are negligible and don't justify the marginally increased risk associated with this test.
Three Point Test method of assessment
- Carry out necessary safety checks as for comfortable pace test.
- Warm up. In some circumstances this can be on a different piece of apparatus. Warm up should last for 5 - 20 minutes. If you do not know your comfortable pace; then carry out a 'comfortable pace' test during the warm up before doing the three point test.
- Calculate the three appropriate workload using results of the 'Comfortable pace' test
- Workload 1 - Comfortable pace
- Workload 2 - 15% above comfortable pace
- workload 3 - 30% above comfortable pace
- You exercise for 4 min's at each workload. Record exact workload and heart rate at the end of the last minute.
- It is advisable to include a 2 - 3 minute recovery period between each workload. This should be at a low intensity.
- Use results to predict anaerobic threshold.
